World Press Freedom Day

World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) is observed all over the world on the May 3 to raise awareness and to celebrate the importance press freedom and to defend the media from attacks on their independence.

Also pay tribute to journalists who have laid down their lives in the exercise of their profession.

The theme for WPFD 2019 is “Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation”.

The World Tuna Day is observed on May 2 to raise awareness about the importance of tuna and to promote more sustainable fishing practices.

United Nations (UN) established the World Tuna Day and it was observed for the first time in 2017.

India was the biggest recipient of funds from Asian Development Bank as the institution committed USD 3 billion in sovereign loans in 2018.

BSNL with the launch of ‘Bharat Fibre’ becomes the first telecom operator to start optical fiber-based high-speed broadband service in Pulwama, Kashmir Valley.

This is the first FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) service deployment in the Kashmir Valley and launched under business partnership model with the local channel partner on a revenue sharing basis.

PayPal India has launched its One Touch instant payments feature for Android devices in India using Google Smart Lock for a seamless payments experience.

OneTouch feature permits Indian consumers to register their android device with PayPal and stay logged into PayPal for further PayPal purchases on that device thus removing the issue of repeated log-ins.

Netherlands Emerged Third Largest Foreign Direct Investor in India in FY18

The Netherlands has emerged as the third largest foreign direct investor in India during 2017-18, with investments estimated at about $2.67 billion across sectors.

Also Netherlands was the second largest destination for foreign investment by Indian companies, after Singapore, with investments worth $12.8 billion in 2017.

On 2nd May 2019, The Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi signed a MoU to implement Centre of Excellence for waste to wealth management technologies in India.

The partnership will provide an effective platform of scientific and technological solutions to bring integrated approaches for effective recycle, reuse and resource recovery of waste.

Ex-ISRO Chairman A S Kiran Kumar Gets France’s Highest Civilian Award

On 2nd May 2019, Former ISRO chairman A S Kiran Kumar conferred with France’s highest civilian award – Chevalier de l’Ordre national de la Legion d’Honneur for his contribution to India-France space cooperation.

The highest civilian honour was conferred to kumar by the Ambassador of France to India, Alexandre Ziegler.

Donald Trump to Award Tiger Woods with Presidential Medal of Freedom

Tiger Woods will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Donald Trump at the White House on 6th May 2019.

Tiger Woods receive the honour as he won his 15th major and fifth green jacket at Augusta National in April 2019.

The medal is one of the highest civilian awards recognizes individuals who have made meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

BSE has appointed Jayshree Vyas as its first independent woman director to its board.

India Retains Top Spot in ICC Test Rankings

India retained its top position in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test team rankings with 113 points in the annual update while New Zealand secured second position with 111 points.

In the ICC One Day International (ODI) team rankings, England retained the top spot with 123 points. England is followed by India with 121 points.
