MoEFCC Constituted A Committee to Implement National Clean Air Program

Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has constituted a committee headed by Chandra Kishore Mishra, Secretary of Union Environment Ministry to implement the National Clean Air Program (NCAP).

The objective is to reduce the PM (particulate matter) 2.5 and PM 10 concentration by 20% to 30% in at least 102 cities by 2024.

India Set to Launch Second Mission to the Moon Chandrayan-2 in July 2019

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) confirmed that the all the modules for the India’s second mission to the moon – Chandrayaan 2 would be ready in July 2019.

Chandrayaan 2 mission has three modules namely Orbiter, Lander (Vikram) & Rover (Pragyan).

The lander is expected to touch down on the lunar surface in early September 2019.

The mission would land on the southern pole of the moon which has not been explored much before by any of the countries.

Green Number Plates Become Mandatory for All Electric Vehicles

The Centre government has asked the state transport departments to ensure that all battery-operated vehicles (Electric Vehicles), both existing and new should have green number plates immediately.

The road transport ministry in August 2018 had introduced the new number plate for all battery-operated or electric vehicles (EVs).

UN Designates JeM Chief Masood Azhar as Global Terrorist

On 1st May 2019, India’s Permanent Representative to UN, Syed Akbaruddin announcement that the United Nations Security Council has designated Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist.

He was designated as a global terrorist after China lifted its hold on a proposal to blacklist him under the Security Council’s Sanctions Committee.

Jaish-e-Mohammed is a Pakistan-based Deobandi jihadist terrorist group active in Kashmir. The group’s primary motive is to separate Kashmir from India and merge it into Pakistan.

UK Becomes First Parliament to Declare Climate Emergency

The U.K. parliament declared a symbolic climate change emergency backing a call by opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn for “rapid and dramatic action” to protect the environment for generations to come.

With this UK becomes the first country in the world to declare Climate Emergency.

Indo-French Joint Naval Exercise “Varuna-19” Commences off Goa Coast

The 17th edition of Indo-French joint naval exercise will be conducted in two phases namely Varuna 19.1 and Varuna 19.2.

The first part of the exercise, Varuna 19.1 is the harbour phase that will be held off the Goa coast from May 1-10, 2019.

The second part, Varuna 19.2 is the sea phase which is scheduled to be held at the end of May 2019 in Djibouti.

The bilateral naval exercise which was started in 1983 and christened as ‘Varuna’ in 2001, form a vital part of the Indo-French strategic partnership.

State Bank of India Links Interest Rates to RBI’s Repo Rate

Public sector lender State Bank of India (SBI) became the first Indian bank to link its saving and loan interest rates to the RBI’s repo rate.

SBI linked its interest rate on savings account with a balance above Rs1 lakh and short-term loans like overdraft and cash credit facility to RBI’s repo rate with effect on 1st May 2019.

The interest rates on large SBI savings account deposits and interest rate on some short-term loans will automatically change as and when RBI changes its repo rate.

LIC HFL launches Udyam Centre in Bengaluru

LIC Housing Finance (LIC HFL) in association with Lok Bharti Education Society has launched ‘Udyam’, a skilling center in Bengaluru.

The Centres of Excellence will provide training to marginalised youth in the BFSI (Banking, financial services and insurance), retail, and IT/ ITES (Information Technology Enabled Services) sectors.

DCIL Signed MoU with WAPCOS to Jointly Identify Future Projects

Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL) signed a MoU with Water & Power Consultancy Services (India) Limited (WAPCOS) to jointly identify future projects.

The MoU is to jointly recognize suitable future projects and carry out geotechnical investigation and engineering consultancy in fields like Water Resources, Power and Infrastructure Port and Harbour dredging.

WAPCOS is a mini-ratna PSU under Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.

Drake Sets Record with Most Wins At Billboard Awards 2019

Rapper Drake set a record with the most wins ever, taking home 12 honours at the Billboard Music Awards 2019 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, US on 1st May 2019.

Drake surpassed singer Taylor Swift to become the top award recipient in the Billboard Music Awards history. He now has a total of 27 Billboard Awards to his name.

Winners of Goldman Environmental Prize 2019

The Goldman Environmental Prize is also called the Green Nobel is awarded every year to grassroots environmental activists, one from each of the world’s six geographic regions.

It was awarded by the Goldman Environmental Foundation headquartered in San Francisco, California.

Kumar Sangakkara Named As First Non-British President of MCC

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has been appointed as the first non-British president of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

He will succeed Anthony Wreford and take up the post on October 1, 2019 and will serve for a period of one year.


Jaipur to Host Asian Youth Women Handball Championship

Jaipur will host the 8th Asian Youth Women Handball Championship in which 10 teams will participate and played from August 21 to 30, 2019.

It is the first time that the tournament will be hosted by Jaipur. Earlier Delhi had hosted it in 2015.

Apurvi Chandela attains world number one spot in women’s 10 m air rifle event

According to the latest rankings released by International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) on 1st May 2019, India shooter Apurvi Chandela secured world number one position in the 10m Air Rifle rankings.
