Indonesia Releases Special Stamp on Theme of Ramayana

On 23rd April 2019, Indonesia released a special commemorative stamp on the theme of Ramayana to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties with India.

The stamp features a scene from Hindu epic Ramayana in which Jatayu valiantly fought to save Sita.

The stamp was designed by renowned Indonesian sculptor Padmashri Bapak Nyoman Nuart.

Israel to Name A Golan Town After Trump

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he intends to name a new settlement in the Golan Heights after US President Donald Trump to honour his recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the disputed territory.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and annexed the territory in 1981. The move has not been recognised internationally.

Govt Raises Authorised Capital of Allahabad Bank to Rs 8,000 Cr

On 23rd April 2019, Central government has increased the authorised capital of the state-owned Allahabad bank from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 after consultation with the Reserve Bank of India.

The increase in authorised capital will enable the bank to raise further fund up to a maximum ceiling of Rs 8,000 crore.

RBI Approves Proposal of HDFC for Holding 9.9 % Stakes in Bandhan Bank

On 22nd April 2019, The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given its nod to HDFC Ltd for acquiring stakes in Bandhan Bank.

The RBI granted approval to acquire shareholding of 9.9 % or less of the paid-up capital of Bandhan Bank upon the effective date of scheme of amalgamation.

The amalgamation is awaiting for the approvals from National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and the respective shareholders of Gruh Finance and Bandhan Bank, HDFC Ltd.

SEBI Reduces Minimum Subscription Requirement for REITs, InvITs

Markets regulator, SEBI has reduced the minimum subscription requirement as well as defined trading lots for Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs).

Minimum subscription requirement for REITs is Rs 50,000 earlier it was Rs 2 lakhs and for InvITs is Rs 1 lakh earlier it was Rs 10 lakhs.

The amendments are aimed at providing flexibility to the issuers in terms of fundraising and increasing the access of these investment vehicles to investors.

Huawei, Infosys Sign Partnership Pact for Cloud Computing Business

On 23rd April 2019, Chinese telecom company Huawei’s business arm, Huawei Cloud and IT firm Infosys signed a memorandum on strategic cooperation to jointly develop solutions around cloud computing services for business organisations.

The cloud computing system helps entities use software, store data and other IT related work without the need to buy complete software or hardware that they may need for computing purposes.

Russia Successfully Tests World’s First Floating Nuclear Power Plant

Russia has successfully tested the world’s first floating nuclear power plant (NPP), Akademik Lomonosov, a subsidiary of Rosatom nuclear corporation.

The floating power plant is at the Baltiysky Zavod shipyard in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Reactors of the floating atomic block were launched in November 2018.

World’s first malaria vaccine launched in Africa

On 23rd April 2019, World’s first and only malaria vaccine was launched in the African country of Malawi as part of a landmark pilot program to protect children from the world’s leading killers.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), RTS,S is the first and to date the only vaccine that has demonstrated it can significantly reduce malaria in children.

The vaccine was found to prevent about four in ten malaria cases, including three in ten cases of life-threatening severe malaria.

Bajrang Punia wins Gold in Asian Wrestling Championship

World number one Bajrang Punia won gold at Asian Wrestling Championship by defeating Kazakhstan’s Sayatbek Okassov in a nail-biting 65kg men’s freestyle final in China’s Xian.

It is Bajrang’s second gold at Asian championship, having won one in 2017.

Parveen Rana secured a silver medal in 79kg category. Satywart Kadian picked a bronze medal In 97 Kg category.
