Gagandeep Kang Becomes First Indian Female FRS

Professor Gagandeep Kang has become the first Indian female scientist to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 358 years of history of this prestigious scientific academy.

Gagandeep is known for her inter-disciplinary research studying the transmission, development, and prevention of enteric infections and their sequelae in children in India.

Book on Jallianwala Bagh poem ‘Khooni Vaisakhi’ released in UAE

A book containing English translation of the 100-year-old classic Punjabi poem about Jallianwala Bagh massacre, ‘Khooni Vaisakhi’ has been released in Abu Dhabi.

The poem was translated by Suri, the poem was written by his grandfather revolutionary poet and novelist Nanak Singh, a Jallianwala Bagh survivor, wrote it after witnessing first-hand the events of April 13, 1919.

The book was also released in New Delhi on April 13, marking 100 years since the Jallianwala Bagh massacre that took place in Amritsar.

Christina Koch to Set Record for Longest Spaceflight by A Woman

NASA astronaut Christina Koch is going to have her mission on the International Space Station (ISS) extended to 328 days, which would set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman.

She arrived at the space station on March 14, 2019 is scheduled to remain in orbit until February 2020, which would beat the record held by another female NASA astronaut, Peggy Whitson, who spent 288 days aboard the ISS in 2016-17.

India Ranks 140th in World Press Freedom Index 2019

India ranked 140th out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index 2019 released by Reporters without Borders, an international NGO based in Paris. India has slipped two places as compared to its rank in 2018.

The World Press Freedom Index 2019′, topped by Norway for the third year while Finland has taken second place and Sweden has taken the third place.

Deutsche Bank Appoints Kaushik Shaparia As CEO for India

Deutsche Bank has appointed Kaushik Shaparia as the chief executive officer for India to succeed Ravneet Gill with effect from May 2019.

Gill left the bank to head private lender YES Bank.

Shaparia served as Asia Pacific Head of Trade Finance & Cash Management for Corporates for Regional Operations, Deutsche Bank (China) as well as Global Head of Subsidiary Coverage at Deutsche Bank.

Jaideep Sarkar appointed As High Commissioner to South Africa

External Affairs Ministry has appointed Jaideep Sarkar as India’s next High Commissioner to South Africa. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.

He is presently Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bhutan.

On 18th April 2019, The Election Commission (EC) has launched a mobile application named “Voter Turnout” that provides near-real time availability of voter turnout during elections across India.

The app shows the state-wise and constituency-wise data regarding voter turnout in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.


Chandigarh to host Asian Billiards, Snooker Championships

Chandigarh will host the 18th Asian Billiards, the 20th Under-21 Asian Snooker Championship and the 3rd Ladies Asian Snooker Championship from April 27 to May 3, 2019.

The tournament will be organised by the Punjab Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) under the aegis of the Asian Confederation of Billiard Sports (ACBS) and Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI).

Bajrang Regains Top Spot in World Wrestling Rankings

According to the rankings were released by United World Wrestling, India’s Bajrang Punia has regained the world number one spot in the men’s 65-kilogram freestyle category rankings.

Punia won Gold in the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games as well as silver in the World Championships in 2018, secured 58 points ahead of Akhmed Chakaev of Russia.
