4th Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific Congress 2019 Held in New Delhi

The 4th Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific (RCAP) 2019 Congress is being hosted in New Delhi by South Delhi Municipal Corporation from April 15-17, 2019.It is for the first time the event is being held in India.

It has been organised by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) – Local Governments for Sustainability, Germany.

It provides a platform for urban resilience to identify implementable solutions and climate change adaptation through a variety of innovative solutions.

Google Opens its First African AI Lab in Ghana

Google has opened its first African Artificial Intelligence (AI) centre in Accra, Ghana.

The lab will use AI to develop solutions in areas such as healthcare and education, as well as in agriculture to diagnose certain types of crop disease.

Indian Navy-Vietnam Peoples Navy Bilateral Exercise

Indian Navy undertook the second edition of the bilateral maritime exercise between the Indian Navy and Vietnam Peoples Navy (IN – VPN BILAT EX) from April 13-16, 2019 at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam.

The exercise was undertaken as a part of the ongoing Overseas Deployment of Eastern Fleet ships to South East Asian countries.

Coast Guard Patrol Ship Veera Commissioned

On 15th April 2019, Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat commissioned the Indian Coast Guard Ship Veera at Naval Jetty at the dockyard at Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

Veera is the third in the series of offshore patrol vessels of the Coast Guard. It will help coast guard to monitor maritime boundaries more effectively.

It was built by L&T shipbuilding facility in Chennai.

IDBI Bank Launches Instant Online Accounts for NRI

IDBI Bank has launched the ‘NRI-Insta-Online’ account-opening process for NRIs residing in Financial Action Task Force (FATF) member countries.

The Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) living in FATF member countries will now be able to open account in IDBI Bank without submitting paper documents as well as KYC proofs.

EFL to Issue Green Masala Bond to Fund SME Sector

Indian Non Banking Financial Company (NBFC) Electronica Finance Ltd (EFL) has entered into an agreement for issuance of green masala bonds of $10 million.

The funds are dedicated to expanding EFL’s energy-efficient machinery lending portfolio for SMEs operating in the carbon-intensive manufacturing sector.

This is India’s first green masala bonds issued by a private sector non-banking finance company.

ADB Committed Highest-Ever $3 Bn Loans to India in 2018

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) had committed to provide USD 3 billion in sovereign loans to India in 2018. This is the highest level of assistance by ADB to India since 1986.

Overall the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has committed a total of USD 3.88 billion which including sovereign loans and co-financing during the year ended December 2018.

Bandhan Bank Gets CCI Approval to Acquire Gruh Finance

On 15th April 2019, Bandhan Bank has received the approval of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for the proposed acquisition of Gruh Finance, the affordable housing finance arm of HDFC Ltd.

Gruh Finance was taken over in January 2019 by Bandhan Bank in a share-swap deal.

The merger deal will reduce the shareholding of Bandhan Bank’s promoter Bandhan Financial Holdings’ to about 61% from the current 82%.

Post merger, HDFC will hold 14.9% stake in the merged entity from about 57% in Gruh Finance.

Fincare Small Finance Bank Awarded the Celent Model Bank 2019 Award

Fincare Small Finance Bank has won the Celent Model Bank 2019 Award under Financial Inclusion category for its LAP (Loans Against Property) D.Lite at the Innovation & Insight Day organized by Celent in New York.

D.Lite is a tab-based solution designed and developed in-house by Fincare SFB for origination and instant underwriting of loans against property targeted at micro and small enterprises.

United Nations honour Indian peacekeepers in Sudan

A total of 150 Indian peacekeepers serving with the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have received medals of honour for their dedicated service and sacrifice.

Indian peacekeepers serving with the mission have undertaken numerous training sessions of community animal health workers, providing value addition training for farmers to help them make the most of their produce.

Punjab National Bank (PNB) has appointed Rajesh Kumar Yaduvanshi as the Executive Director of the bank with effect from 15th April 2019.

PNB now has three Executive Directors namely L V Prabhakar, A K Azad and Rajesh Kumar Yaduvanshi.

Mithali Raj is Goodwill Ambassador for SCCWC 2019

Indian Woman Cricketer Mithali Raj has been named as the goodwill ambassador of the Indian team for the Street Child Cricket World Cup (SCCWC) 2019.

Along Mithali Raj, Saurav Ganguly and Rajasthan Royals join as the goodwill ambassadors to support the Indian team.

The Street Child Cricket World Cup 2019 will be held at the Lord’s Cricket Ground, London, England.

The first Cricket World Cup for street connected children will take place just before of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales.
